Situated at the extreme edge of England, close to the Welsh border, Llanrothal church nestles within a landscape of great beauty, just yards from the River Monnow.

The nave has a 12th century window in its north wall, while the other windows here are 14th century. The impressive chancel south window is clearly later, probably c.1400.

The church is said to have been founded by a Celtic saint, St Ridol, and the dedication to St John the Baptist is thought to date from the Norman period. The building was rescued from total ruin in 1921.
